Why does the illegal formation infraction exist?

The most exciting thing that came out of the Texans loss to the New York Giants on Sunday was that out of sight would be 53 yd catch that Nuke Hopkins pulled in.  It looked like is fingers had tractor beams on them and the ball was guided into his Lurch sized left hand before he corralled it to secure the catch.  I can even say that it looked like his fingers were 5 anglers all reeling in the same baby whale.  I know it’s a stretch but you get my drift.  It was all wiped away due to too many players being lined up on the line of scrimmage.  I never understood that penalty. I mean what significance does it carry?  Is it a matter of safety? Can’t be.  I don’t think anyone could ever explain to me why this rule exists without me giving them a blank stare silently saying, “I’m still not convinced”.

The 1st time that I encountered this infraction was when I was in 10th grade playing against one of our in district rivals, Cypress Creek Cougars.  Coach Hooks was trying me out at Tailback for a game because he wanted to utilize my running ability at another position besides my original quarterback position.  The QB that they brought up to replace me was having a bad game and we were behind by less than a touchdown.  With over a little more than 90 yards to get to the end zone and less than a minute left to get there Coach Hooks told me to get in and run the offense from behind center.  Since I was shorter than my O Linemen and had decent speed the coaches put in a sprint out/option package that allowed me to roll out and hitting crossing patterns.

We marched down the field as the time winded down until we found ourselves at 2yd line with only a few seconds in regulation.  The center snapped the ball and I threw a short slant to my Z receiver on the right side of the formation.  Touchdown, with no time left on the clock!  We WON!!!! Or did we? In the midst of celebrating I saw a yellow flag on the ground and the ref that threw it waving off the touchdown.  The penalty? Illegal formation.  Too many men on the line of scrimmage.  The Z receiver that caught the TD was supposed to be backed off of the line but unfortunately he wasn’t aware of that fact and neither was I.

I never knew that penalty existed.  Exhilaration turned into disbelief.  It was a true bi-polar moment.  The refs allowed us to have one more crack at it by putting one second on the clock.  Coach decided to take me out put the other QB back in.  He overthrew the tight-end and we lost the game.  I was too upset to even cry.  That was a long quiet ride back to our school all because of some unnecessary penalty that seems to have no reason to exist in the game of football.

Nuke Hopkins was deprived of 53 yards and 1 catch to add to his 6 catch 116 yard performance because of this rule.  One can say that he and myself should have shown the rules and this blog would not be necessary but Coach O’Brien echoes my thought process.    “We’ve got to do a better job of coaching that”, he said. I agree.  I was in High school when this inpractical infraction bit me on the backside but Hopkins is a pro.  He should know better, but I still say that he shouldn’t have anything to know better about since this rule shouldn’t be in the rule book i the 1st place.  I’m done complaining but the bottom line is that Nuke is a baaaaaaaad boy when it comes to his 1 hand catch game as the footage will show!

Am I My Brother’s Keeper? Yes I Am!

This is such a right on story that I had to pub it at the corner store.  The one thing that ya boy 12 has always been about is being 100 with family.  Ma’ake Kemoeatu, Ex Baltimore Ravens Defensive Lineman, committed the ultimate sacrifice by retiring from the game that pays his bills and gives him thrills to give up one of his kidneys to his younger brother, who is a former 2 time Superbowl Champ with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In a society so dominated by a “Get mine, f yours” attitude this story takes me back to the time when it was cool to just be a good person.  It’s very human and I find that refreshing.  As the oldest of my siblings, I understand him feeling responsible for his younger sibling even though they are both huge grown ass men.  That’s just what big brothers do.  Give the link a read and see if you feel the same. Peace

Andre’s Ancencion

I’m probably the biggest #80 fan around.  It’s almost to the level of man crush.  I am a true fan boy when it comes to my hometown team’s all-time leading receiver.  There’s only two other athletes that played for a Houston professional team that I get more crazy over and that’s The Dream and Earl Campbell!!!! This series of blogs will be short and to the point.  At this point Andre Johnson is sitting at #15 on the all-time receiving yards list after passing Irving Fryar this past Sunday in a game vs the Oakland Raiders.  His 12,828 yards is now 261 yards away from the mark Hall of Famer Steve Largent set during his illustrious career.  Largent’s mark was actually #1 until Mr Jerry Rice aka the GOAT ran past him and kept it moving.  Since then several players have moved past the former Seahawk great.  Let’s hope Andre Johnson stays healthy and puts up his usual big numbers for the rest of this season and beyond so that there will be no doubt if he belongs in the HOF 5 years after he hangs up the cleats.

Battle of the Ages 2?

You know when you’re hanging out at the corner store you hear things in passing conversations.  Just got wind that there have been talks between 49 year old IBF Light Heavy Weight Champ Bernard “The Alien”(formerly The Executioner) Hopkins, and former 3x Champion 48 year old Reggie “Sweet” Johnson to face off in the near future.  Johnson is in training in Houston Tx to make his 2015 comeback and Hopkins is preparing for a November match up against the heavy handed Russian  Sergey Kovalev in Atlantic City.  If Hopkins can put that ring wisdom of his to use against Kovalev and show that the OG still has it then we may end up seeing this face off after all.

It reminds me of when Larry Holmes and George Foreman were supposed to meet up 1999.  The fight never materialized because the promoter failed to meet Foreman’s 10 million dollar requirement.  Foreman was 50 and Holmes was 49 at the time that they were scheduled to fight.  Reggie Johnson and Hopkins will be roughly the same ages as Foreman and Holmes were if they decide to lace on the gloves.

As stated earlier, Johnson is making a comeback, but Hopkins never left the ring so that’s an advantage for The Alien in terms of ring rust.  I’m also thinking that this will not be a big pay per view draw, especially if Hopkins is no longer champion after throwing hands with the much younger Kovalev(31) so the money is not the motivating force behind these two going at it.

So why fight? One reason…. Cuz that’s what fighters do!  They face challenges and attempt to overcome them.  In their profession the challenge is the guy across the ring from them.  You can’t take that combative warrior spirit out of these guys.  They are just cut from that cloth and I wouldn’t be surprised if their ancestors from the African continent were warriors of the tribes and that gene lives on through them.

When I asked Reggie Johnson about the chances that it would happen he said, “Bernard likes the idea of us fighting each other at our age for World Titles. We’re on the same page.”

I hear things, but 12 ain’t the one to gossip.

My take on the Ray Rice saga

Welcome to the Corner Store. After watching this latest Ray Rice footage of knockin out his then fiance I’ve decided to address the issue.  I didn’t want to touch the issue at 1st because there was just too much speculation about what happened in the elevator.  Now that we see the footage of what took place before he drug her out and laid her on the floor I can honestly speak on it without having to guess what really happened.  The last thing that I want to do is assume that a man beat down his significant other if he only pushed her off of him to keep her from attacking him and she fell and hit her head.  Obviously that ain’t what happened.  He instigated the physical confrontation on the elevator.  I’ll get to that later though.  What I really want to touch on is the fact that everybody wants to lynch and castrate Ray Rice for assaulting her but very few are addressing the real issue.  When Stephen A Smith addressed the entire issue he was blasted and that’s BS.  The fact of the matter is that the elevator assault was not an isolated incident.  There was obviously a build up that both parties played a role in.  We don’t know what was said or done before the cameras picked them up so there’s no need to speculate.  From the moment they appeared on camera we see Ray leaning on a pole or column waiting on with fiance.  She appears on camera and looks at him, says something, then smacks him in the face, and then walks off like that was a playa move.  The problem besides the fact that she hit him in the face is that she did it in a public place.  There were at least 2 people in the immediate vicinity that saw and or heard what they had going on.  One lady looked towards them and looked down to the ground as if to say “let me mind my business”. The other lady just kept walking.  As a man, my pet peeve is to be embarrassed in public.  If my wife has an issue with me, she knows not to address it in a public forum like social media or a public place. Unless, hypothetically, she’s intentionally trying to push my buttons because she knows what buttons to push like most wives.  We have an understanding that if I piss her off then address me when we get away from spectators, unless I’m acting a fool in public.  Mrs. Rice showed her fiance up in front of on lookers when she slapped him in his face before they got on the elevator.  That’s embarrassing to any man.  Men don’t take that kind of stuff well and unfortunately too many sisters are comfortable with dishing out that type of treatment on their men in public.  It’s an attempt to belittle and emasculate a man when his woman loud talks him and smacks his face in public.  That’s the only fault that I see on this video that Mrs. Rice has.

The rest is on Ray.  Maybe he snapped.  I’m not sure what they had going on, but it looked like he couldn’t wait to get on the elevator so he could get on her ass for whatever happened outside of the elevator.  He immediately walked up on her while she was obviously heated over their drama, then either says something to her or spits on her.  The media outlets say that he spit on her.  She then hits him with a forearm to the chest to get him off of her, which was well within her rights of having her personal space invaded when she feels threatened or assaulted, then he open hand mushed her with some force.  She then approaches him without throwing a blow and gets struck with what I think is another open hand blow(mush) to the face that was more forceful than the 1st blow that caused her to hit her head on the metal elevator handrail.  I believe that this is what knocked her out.  The media spins things like saying he specifically hit her with an uppercut or he beat on her with combos.  What Ray did was weak as hell and can’t be excused but don’t spin it to make the story sound better for your ratings.

The worse part is that they sat on that podium and let the woman take all of the heat by saying that she attacked him on the elevator and he was defending himself.  I’ve had that happen to me before and it’s a real situation.  I have a friend that this happened to as well.  He didn’t hit the lady back but he did grab her wrists hard as hell to keep himself from being punched which in turn caused her to bruise.  People were going around saying that he  beat on that woman because they saw bruises on her arms all the while ignoring the scratches on his face and neck from her attack.  So I don’t just jump on the bandwagon of every man that puts bruises on a woman is a wife beater.  There are some dudes that habitually beat women up but we can’t put that jacket on the back of every man that gets into a domestic dispute with a woman.

This woman clearly assaulted Ray by smacking him in his face and saying whatever she said to him outside of the elevator but he instigated the entire elevator incident and took it waaaaaaayyyy too far.  He could have killed that woman and been in much more trouble than being kicked out of the NFL.  Ever seen He Got Game when Denzel Washington shoved his wife down and she hit her head on the stove?  He went to prison for manslaughter even though that was not his intentions.  I don’t care what she said to him before they got on camera or if she did embarrass him by smacking his face in public it ain’t worth losing your freedom over a murder case.

My main point is that there is a better way to handle disputes that we all need to take heed to.  She could have waited until they got in their room to express her anger instead of calling him out and belittling him in front of people by smacking him in his face and he could have just left for a while to cool off if she was pushing his buttons.  Shit happens but we ain’t got to swim in it.

I don’t believe that we grow from situations if we only address one side of it.  We have to view the entire situation with an unbiased eye and see what we could have done differently to steer the issue in a direction that is more conflict resolution friendly.  I hope this brother and sister can get on with their lives without the world prying into their every move  and I hope that they are more mature coming out of the storm than they were before the storm brewed.  If you have conflict issues in your relationship, then start by seeing what you can do to bring about an atmosphere of peace instead of being the hell raiser of the family.  If things are as bad as what we saw on that video then maybe it’s best that you no longer to continue to build with that person.  I’m going to do my best not to address this subject anymore as I have my own family to lead and I have my own flaws to correct. Peace
